Sustainable nonwovens

Global environmental concerns – such as diminishing resources, climate change and marine plastic pollution – are creating new market expectations and demand for sustainable nonwoven products. These global challenges drive also us to constantly develop new and innovative solutions with a smaller environmental impact.

Sustainable products

Suominen offers a sustainable portfolio to fulfill the needs of today's demand. Our portfolio consists of products for every category and end-usage without compromising in quality and environmental impact. Read more about our products on our Sustainable products page.

Developing products with smaller environmental impacts

Suominen has recognized the growing demand for more sustainable products. Suominen’s current Sustainable Product Portfolio consists of products made of renewable, recycled and/or plastic-free raw materials as well as compostable and totally dispersible nonwovens. We are constantly developing new products for this portfolio. We are also committed to decreasing the environmental impacts of our products by taking into consideration the entire supply chain. This can be achieved by using raw materials with lower environmental impacts and optimizing our own processes as well as transportation distances. . Developing more environmentally sound products also helps our customers to reduce the environmental impacts of their own products and to achieve their sustainability goals.

Our target is to increase the sales of sustainable products by 50% by 2025 compared to the base year 2019 and to launch at least ten sustainable products per year. In 2020 the sales of our sustainable products increased 22,5 % and we launched nine sustainable products.

Measuring the environmental impacts of nonwoven products

The environmental impacts of the nonwovens production process comprise only a part of the total environmental impacts of nonwoven products. For that reason, it is important to take account of impacts caused in the other stages of the value chain, such as the production of raw materials.

Suominen is currently measuring the environmental impacts of its products by calculating their carbon footprint. Our long-term goal is to provide even more comprehensive information about the sustainability of our products and to integrate other relevant environmental and social aspects to our product sustainability index.

Sustainability categories

Definitions around what types of plastic are considered acceptably biodegradable have been incomplete and can be confusing to navigate when trying to select a nonwoven.

Below is a simplified visual guide to understanding some basics within sustainable options, and how certain raw materials can contribute to a nonwoven’s sustainability

Recycled content

Product contains recycled fibers, such as recycled post-consumer polyester, polypropylene or post-industrial cotton fibers.

Renewable raw materials

All the raw materials used are from plant-based sources. We offer nonwovens made from a wide variety of renewable fibers, from biobased plastics to natural fibers.

Nonwovens are produced by using fibers from renewable resources that are compostable in industrial composting process as defined by international compostability standards.

Plastic free

Nonwovens made of biodegradable fibers of natural origin, such as viscose, pulp and cotton.

Flushable & dispersible

Products are biodegradable and dispersible in water and comply with or exceed the latest industry flushability standards.

Engaging Single Use Plastics Directive

Suominen supports the reduction of marine pollution, and we are ready to cooperate with the EU in this mission. Given the irreplaceable role our products play in modern society, it’s critical to promote consumer education and proper labeling of nonwovens products to avoid improper disposal methods. As legislation develops in the EU and in other governmental entities, Suominen will continue to lobby for more clear definitions in the legislation itself, in order for the laws to be as effective as possible.

Suominen offers traceability certifications for FSC®, PEFC™ & SFI®, as well as skin-safe certifications like STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. For dispersible grades, Suominen manages INDA / EDANA compliance certificates.
