Sustainability Agenda

Suominen’s Changemaker business strategy was launched in spring 2017, and Suominen worked throughout the year to create new Sustainability Agenda for the years 2018–2021 to support the targets set in the business strategy.

With the sustainability agenda 2018–2021, Suominen continues where we left off with the previous sustainability strategy. We recognize that societies and natural environments are changing due to, for example, climate change, and people are increasingly aware of environmental and social issues. These changes also require Suominen as a company to evolve and raise the bar we set for ourselves in terms of sustainability.

The Sustainability Agenda has three focus areas

1. A caring company

Suominen aims to improve the quality of life of its employees and aims at business free of social risks. The strategic targets in this focus area address health and safety, employee wellbeing and responsible sourcing of raw materials.

Targets 2021

Health & safety: We will have zero lost time accidents.

Employee wellbeing: Target to be defined after a pilot project for measuring wellbeing is completed in 2018.

Sourcing: 100% of our fiber suppliers are audited for compliance with the Supplier Code of Conduct by 2021.

2. Low-impact manufacturing

Suominen wants to produce nonwovens with the smallest possible resource consumption and impact on the environment. The strategic targets deal with improving our water and energy efficiency, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and reducing the amount of production waste that ends up in landfills.

Targets 2021

Water efficiency: We will use 8% less water per ton of product compared to the level of 2016.

Energy efficiency: We will use 8.5% less energy per ton of product compared to the level of 2016.

CO2 emissions: Our carbon dioxide emissions per ton of product will be 7% lower compared to the level of 2016.

Waste to landfill: We will produce zero waste to landfill.

3. The most sustainable nonwovens

Suominen strives to offer the most sustainable nonwovens in the market. As there is no industry standard or other method available to measure the sustainability of nonwoven materials, Suominen has decided to create a method of its own, a so-called product sustainability index. Strategic targets will be set after the index is created in 2018.

Suominen’s Sustainability Agenda for 2018–2021 is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the United Nations. Through the Sustainability Agenda, Suominen especially contributes to ten of 17 SDGs, which put our work into a larger context:

Sustainability reporting

 

Suominen’s Annual Report 2017 examines sustainability from social, environmental, governance and economic perspectives. Non-financial information required by Directive 2014/95/EU and the Finnish Accounting Act is disclosed in the Sustainability section of the Annual Report. We report on our progress in sustainability in the Annual Report.

Health, safety and environmental data is collected from Suominen’s production units. In accordance with the materiality principle, locations that do not have production operations are not included in the data.

The graphics in the Sustainability section present historical data as of 2013 and reflect Suominen’s continuing operations. The Windsor Locks plant in CT, USA, is operated jointly by Suominen and Ahlstrom-Munksjö Corporation. Only the resources used by Suominen at the Windsor Locks plant are taken into account in the environmental figures. In the safety indicators, personnel who have worked on Suominen’s production lines but are not on Suominen’s payroll are excluded.
