Concrete targets to support our comprehensive sustainability work

Suominen’s Sustainability agenda covers several responsibility-related themes ranging from people issues to environmentally responsible manufacturing and products to corporate citizenship with a global reach. To further support the execution of our sustainability themes, we have now set concrete targets for each of them.

As part of the work to renew its business strategy, Suominen also revised its sustainability agenda to fully support the achievement of the sustainability and growth targets stated in its vision and strategy. We have also identified how our work supports United Nations’ Sustainable Development goals and identified the areas where we are able to make the biggest impact.

Our sustainability agenda focuses on four main themes: People and safety; Sustainable nonwovens; Low-impact manufacturing; and Corporate citizenship.

These themes were defined based on the materiality assessment that was conducted in collaboration with an independent third party in 2019 and now we have set measurable targets for each theme.

People and safety

Occupational safety and the overall well-being of employees is a priority for Suominen.

A safe workplace is one of our top priorities and we have a strong focus on safety, accident prevention and safety culture. We keep a record of all work-related accidents and identify their causes to prevent similar accidents in the future and we continuously concentrate on further strengthening our safety culture.

Increasing our employee engagement is one of our people-related key targets. We will conduct a global employee engagement survey in 2020 to create action plans to systematically develop our employee engagement and performance.

Our targets:

  • Zero Lost Time Accidents (LTA)
  • Engagement index (target to
    be set when index ready)

Low-impact manufacturing

For Suominen, environmental responsibility means using resources efficiently and with the smallest possible impact on the environment. The most significant environmental impacts caused by the production of nonwovens include consumption of water and energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste to landfill.

We are committed to continuously improving our production efficiency and the efficient utilization of natural resources.

Reduction targets are set per ton of product compared to base year of 2019.

Our targets:

  • 20% reduction of energy consumption
  • 20% reduction of process waste to
    landfill
  • 20% reduction of water intake
  • 20% reduction of emitted
    greenhouse gas emissions

Sustainable nonwovens

Global environmental concerns – such as marine plastic pollution, climate change and diminishing resources- are creating new market expectations and demand for sustainable nonwoven products. At the same time, the demand for hygiene products is growing and must be met in a sustainable way.

Suominen’s current Sustainable Product Portfolio consists of products made of renewable, recycled and/or plastic-free raw materials as well as compostable and totally dispersible nonwovens. We are constantly developing new and innovative products for this portfolio.  We aim to offer carbon footprint information of our products to customers as well as use this information in our product development process in order to reduce environmental impacts of our offering. We are developing our product sustainability index  to cover other environmental impacts as well.

Our targets:

  • Over 10 sustainable product launches per year
  • Sustainable products: 50% increase of sales by 2025

Corporate citizenship

With global operations on three continents, we provide employment and business opportunities to a wide range of stakeholders. Continuous interaction with our stakeholders is a key aspect of Suominen’s approach to sustainability.

Our daily operations are guided by Suominen’s Code of Conduct and other related policies. These create the foundation for our sustainable business practices and help us to ensure that all our operations are carried out in a responsible and globally aligned manner. We expect our business partners to act responsibly and to comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Our targets:

  • Renewed Code of Conduct coverage: 100% of existing employees and new hires
  • Raw material suppliers audited against supplier code (based on risk assessment)
